What Is Raydium?

Raydium is an automated market maker (AMM) and decentralized exchange (DEX) built on the Solana blockchain. It is one of the most widely used DEXs in the Solana ecosystem, offering fast transaction speeds and low fees compared to Ethereum-based alternatives. Whether you want to swap tokens, provide liquidity, or farm yield, Raydium is a central hub for on-chain activity on Solana.

What You'll Need Before You Start

  • A Solana-compatible wallet — Phantom and Backpack are the most popular choices.
  • SOL in your wallet — You need SOL to pay for transaction fees (gas). Even a small amount, like 0.1 SOL, is usually sufficient for several swaps.
  • Tokens you want to trade — These should already be in your wallet before visiting Raydium.

Step 1: Connect Your Wallet

Navigate to raydium.io in your browser. In the top-right corner, click "Connect Wallet". A list of compatible wallets will appear. Select your wallet (e.g., Phantom), and approve the connection request in your wallet extension. You should now see your wallet address displayed in the header.

Step 2: Navigate to the Swap Interface

From the top navigation menu, click "Swap". This takes you to the token swap interface, where you can exchange one Solana-based token for another. The interface shows two fields: the token you're selling (top) and the token you're buying (bottom).

Step 3: Select Your Tokens and Enter an Amount

Click the token selector dropdown in the top field and choose the token you want to sell. Repeat this for the bottom field to choose what you want to receive. Enter the amount you want to swap in the top field — the estimated output will automatically populate below.

Step 4: Understanding Slippage Tolerance

Slippage is the difference between the expected price of a trade and the actual price at execution. Click the settings gear icon to adjust your slippage tolerance. For most major tokens, 0.5%–1% is fine. For low-liquidity or new tokens, you may need to increase this to 5%–15%. Be cautious — higher slippage settings can expose you to worse fills, or even front-running bots.

Step 5: Confirm the Swap

Once you're satisfied with the details, click "Swap". Your wallet will pop up asking you to approve the transaction. Review the network fee shown and click "Approve". The transaction typically confirms within a few seconds on Solana.

Step 6: Verify the Transaction

After confirmation, Raydium will show a success notification. You can click the transaction hash link to view full details on Solscan or Solana Explorer. Your new token balance should appear in your wallet almost immediately.

Tips for Trading Smarter on Raydium

  • Always double-check the token contract address when trading new or obscure tokens to avoid scam tokens with identical names.
  • Use DEXScreener or DEXTools to check a token's liquidity and price chart before trading.
  • Avoid trading tokens with very low liquidity — you may not be able to sell your position easily.
  • Keep a small reserve of SOL in your wallet at all times for transaction fees.

Final Thoughts

Raydium is one of the most powerful and accessible DEXs available. Once you understand the basics of connecting a wallet, selecting tokens, and managing slippage, you'll be able to execute trades quickly and efficiently. As with all crypto activity, start small while you learn, and always verify what you're buying before swapping.
